Science Curriculum

In KS3 Science pupils get a chance to develop their practical and scientific investigation skills. They will work on identifying variables, planning experiments, recording and analysing data and evaluating errors.

You Will Cover

Year 7

  • Introduction to Science – working scientifically
  • Particles; particle model, elements, mixtures, compounds, density, diffusion
  • Electricity; building circuits, series & parallel circuits, current electricity, changing current, resistance, electromagnets
  • Cells; using microscopes, animal cells, plant cells, specialised cells, organ systems, movement of substances
  • Periodic table; chemical properties, physical properties, trends of the periodic table, reactions of non-metals, development of periodic table.
  • Ecology; abiotic & biotic factors, photosynthesis, variations, food chains & webs, interdependence, populations.
  • Forces; balanced & unbalanced forces, springs, friction, pressure, floating & sinking, drag.

Year 8

  • Magnetism; properties of magnets, magnetic fields, domains, electromagnetism, magnets & motors, the Earth’s magnetism.
  • Energy & waves; energy transfer & stores, fuels, renewable energy, properties of waves, light, sound.
  • Chemical reactions; recognising chemical reactions, rate of reaction & factors affecting the rate of a reaction, energy changes, reactions of metals with water, reactions of metals with oxygen.
  • Acids; acids & alkali, pH & indicators, neutralisation, the reaction of acids & metals, the reaction of acids & carbonates, titrations.
  • Body processes; respiration, pathogens, reproduction, immune response, enzymes & enzyme action, muscles & the skeleton.
  • Plants; structure of a plant, photosynthesis, factors affecting photosynthesis, adaptations of leaves, germination, and reproduction.

Year 9

  • Space; objects in Space, the Solar System, the Moon, the Sun & the Earth, gravity, humans in Space.
  • The Earth & its materials; Earth’s structure, Earth’s resources, the rock cycle, Earth’s atmosphere, carbon cycle, maintaining the Earth
  • Health; healthy diet (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals), unhealthy diet & the consequences, lifestyle & health, genetics.
  • Energy transfer; energy transfer by particles, energy transfer by radiation, machines & energy.

After studying these topics you will learn the transition material and then start GCSE topics after Easter.
