The Wider Curriculum

At Queensmead, we are very proud of the breadth of opportunities we offer our students, to develop them as citizens of the world.

Alongside the formal curriculum, we support our students’ wider personal development through a range of different activities, enabling them to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to keep healthy and safe, whilst preparing for life and work. Not only do these activities shape our students into kind, independent and resilient young people, but it also has an positive impact upon both their academic success alongside their non-academic achievements.

We have developed five key strands to help identify the threads of the wider curriculum, helping you and our young people to see the connections between learning inside and outside the classroom:

  • Queensmead Active – Sport and Fitness
  • Queensmead Creative – Drama, Music and Art
  • Queensmead STEM – Science, Technology and Maths
  • Queensmead Academic – Interventions, personalised and small group tuition
  • Queensmead Culture and Community – Charity, fundraising, Student Leadership English: Relationships

Personal Development

Our taught Personal Development curriculum helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for their health, safety, and future success, both academically and personally. Through fortnightly lessons, we cover RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education), PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), Citizenship, and Careers, linked to the broader curriculum. Our spiral approach revisits key topics each year, allowing students to build on their learning. We also ensure the curriculum remains relevant by reviewing it regularly with input from our student voice groups to address emerging issues alongside statutory content.

Assemblies and Form Time

Our assembly programme is designed to underpin the Personal Development programme, whilst promoting and reinforcing our values of Independence, Resilience, Kindness and Respect. We also respond to current events, where appropriate, adapting our provision to ensure our students learn about key events happening in the world. We develop this through a form time session, called ‘Votes for Schools’, where students engage with global issues and debates.
